Using Feng Shui to Create Mindfulness and Rest in Your Bedroom

You’ve no doubt heard of Feng Shui before. But, what exactly is it? The practice of Feng Shui is deeply intertwined with mindfulness; it’s also about slowing down and noticing the details in your life so that you can truly experience the present moment. This is exactly what you want for your bedroom! It is about more than just moving around furniture or creating a "Zen"-looking room, though. Feng Shui gives you the necessary tools to reduce stress, improve your well-being, and invite joy into your daily life. Plus, it allows your mind to rest and get the deep sleep your body needs to rejuvenate each night.

Just like yoga and meditation, Feng Shui is a centuries-old practice that is much more complicated than can be properly explained in a few paragraphs – however here are a few simple tips and design tweaks that anyone can employ to get started using Feng Shui to create the bedroom oasis their soul desires:

#1 Place your bed in a “commanding position.” One of the most effective and fundamental principles in Feng Shui is called the "commanding position," which means that certain objects should be facing the entry door. The most important objects in a room are to be placed in the command position. In your bedroom, this is your PranaSleep bed. The main door to the bedroom is called the "mouth of Chi," and is thought to be the portal through which energy comes into both your home and life. When you are sleeping in bed, it’s best if you can see the door but not be directly in line with it. Try to place your bed diagonal from the door, while still facing it. This is not always possible due to the size and shape of your bedroom, so you can also make adjustments like placing a mirror at an angle so that you can see the door in the reflection while lying in bed.

#2 Create equal space on both sides of the bed. Once you place your bed in the commanding position of the bedroom, it’s also important to have space available on both sides of the bed. Have your bed easily approachable from both sides. You’ll want both sides of the bed to “match,” keeping the entire room in harmony. For example, you could place a nightstand on each side of the bed. They don’t necessarily have to be the exact same nightstand but keep them the same size and shape at least. In line with this, place similar lamps or plants on each. On your bed, place two pillows, or groups of two.

#3 Choose a solid headboard. We aren’t done with your bed just yet! You need a headboard, preferably a solid headboard without bars or holes, fastened securely to the bed. This solid structure creates stability and harmony in your Chi. Some Feng Shi experts say that heavy cast-iron headboards or ones that have bars have a "cutting" energy you're trying to avoid in such a relaxing space. They say you should opt for a soft, fabric headboard instead.

#4 Incorporate cool colors. The use of color in Feng Shui relates to the five elements of fire, wood, earth, metal, and water. First, go for wall colors that are skin tones to promote maximal rest. Off-white, creams, chocolate browns, and peach tones are fantastic options. These colors are thought to promote maximum sensuality and peaceful vibes. As far as the décor, you’ll want to go for something cool and soothing, like teal.

Your bedroom symbolizes you and affects you the most. We spend many hours sleeping in our beds, so it’s clear to see that the Feng Shui of our bedrooms is of the utmost importance. A bedroom that incorporates proper Feng Shui is a bedroom that invites you, while exciting and calming you at the same time.
